Oceanspray Bows

6/1/2013

Three short videos on some kids bows made from Oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor, also known as creambush or ironwood). Made right from green wood, so they ended up taking quite a bit of set - but this is actually good for the young folks. It makes stringing the bow easy and also if they accidentally dry fire - which is bound to happen - it won't effect the bow as much.

I live in Owasso, Oklahoma.Recently saw a video of a guy making a primitive bow out of oceanspray wood.
Where can I obtain a piece of this wood?I would want a piece for a 48" bow and hope to tiller it to around 30-40 lbs @ about 16" draw length.

Oceanspray Creambush is the name it is known by around here (some also call it "ironwood", but that name is connected to many different plants, depending on area).

It grows in the Pacific Northwest for sure, but I am not sure where else in North America that is grows...we harvest it occasionally and mostly use it when teaching kid bow workshops.
